Kendal News is written for Kendal and the south Lakes: the town itself, then Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside and Grange-over-Sands, and the villages of the Kent and Lyth valleys between them.

The council is Westmorland and Furness, created on 1 April 2023 out of the old South Lakeland, Eden and Barrow districts. It is a wide authority that also reaches Penrith and Barrow-in-Furness, places with little in common with Windermere, and it decides bins, council tax and much of what happens on the roads. Planning is more complicated: inside the national park boundary most applications are decided by the Lake District National Park Authority instead. We say which body a decision came from, every time.

What is covered

  • House prices: what homes actually sold for, by postcode and property type, from Land Registry records.
  • Trains to London: journey times, fares and what is really at Kendal and Oxenholme stations.
  • Roadworks and travel: the closures booked in now, the flood scheme, and car park charges.
  • Planning news: the 491-home application off Burton Road, and the Local Plan that must find room for 26,000.
  • Things to do in Kendal: verified prices and opening hours, including the museums that are currently shut.

Every fact carries a link to the document it came from.
